Slovyansk: comprehensive grant assistance change life circumstances and benchmarks

Two clients of Law Community Center in Slovyansk went through hard life circumstances. For one a lawyer’s advice was the salvation from poverty, for another person sessions with a psychologist became an independent step to a normal life.

Lawyer forced employer to admit workplace injury

The IDP from Lugansk Volodymyr Plakhotnik* addressed Slovyansk LCC in February 2016. He told about his work as a mechanic at a car-service station and about the accident that had happened when he was repairing the car. During repair the jack broke, the car fell and severely injured his hand. Volodymyr underwent several surgeries. However, the owner of the service station refuses to record the fact of injury.

The lawyer of the Center Viktoria Vasilyeva explained that the actions of the owner were illegal. He was obliged to report the case to the Social Insurance Fund against accidents at work and occupational diseases of Ukraine, to create the commission and to establish the fact of the injury.

Victoria Vasilyeva filed complaints of the Fund and of the State Labor Inspectorate of Ukraine. After consideration by the courts the commission was established, which recorded the fact of the occupational injuries and drew up the relevant act.

Now Volodymyr will be able to receive financial compensation and at least partially offset the costs of expensive treatment of the serious injury.

Psychologist helps rehabilitation through imprisonment

33-year-old Dmytro Banshchikov* addressed the Centre after 5-year imprisonment. He told that after returning to Slovyansk he faced the situation he could not cope with. The man has no documents, housing, employment, any other family or even friends. Dmytro did not know their whereabouts. He suggests that due to ATO parents and relatives left the city.

Dmytro told the psychologist of the Centre Tatyana Nikulina that: before release his dreams were related to sel-realization as a decent citizen, but now he feels "the outsider". Dmytro admitted that he really wants change and asked for help him adapt to a new life.

Tatiana Nikulina suggested him consultation meetings once a week and the method of planning his own actions. He agreed. The work started with the definition of the wishes and dreams: to restore documents, to find housing, employment, the mother and father; in the long term - to get married, have a child. These desires were turned into goals – for the first time Dmytro had a plan of achieving his desires.

A week later Dmytro found a job as a porter in the warehouse of building materials, met with the staff. New colleagues treat Dmytro friendly enough and helped him with food and personal hygiene. The director of the warehouse even offered him to live in a small warehouse for a while. Such kind attitude inspired Dmytro.

He continues to work on personal growth guided by the psychologist, learns adaptation and communication skills that are of great use in the still difficult life conditions. Now he understands that a lot depends on his actions and choice of lifestyle.
