Editor of "Legal Space" Olga Zhukova tells future police officers about Human Rights Day and the documentary "Post Maidan"

“Human Rights Day is both the holiday and reminder to all of us of the importance of asserting our rights, neglecting which may push us to the abyss”.
Oleksandra Baklanova, PRO.MOVA analytical center

In December in Kherson region two significant events took place simultaneously: training of field officers and holding the XII Docudays UA Travelling Festival. It would be quite unwise not to arrange the screening of the best documentaries for future police officers.

The team of IRC "Legal space" held a special screening for them on Human Rights Day, December 10. Future field officers watched the Post Maidan documentary by the Ukrainian director Serhiy Andrushko. The film presented Euromaidan participants’ stories. All of them are from different corners of the country - Donetsk, Simferopol, Irpen and Kyiv. Now the characters are trying to suit their lives and actively participate in public life of the country.

The documentary struck the audience with the stories of ordinary people, after all each of them suffered during collisions with law enforcement last year, was injured, but continues to fight for real changes in Ukraine.

Right after the screening hot discussion concerning participation of police in the events of Maidan started. Young men and women joined the discussion of criminal orders following the manner of their former colleagues. Also they were eager to know whether it would have been possible to avoid events in Donetsk and who benefited from this.

The editor of the Legal Space web portal Olga Zhukova comments on the event:

“We’ve selected this film to show the importance of everyone’s involvement in reforming the country. Each he or she-character did not remain on the revolution roadside. They’ve found niches for themselves and points of effort application - whether this is participation in elections, work at polling stations or just trip to "hot" Donetsk to vote. We expect future field officers to be involved in the process of reforming the country, to realize the importance of their honest and professional work”.

After the screening we managed to get both the former militiamen and those who never worked in law enforcement agencies to the conversation.

“I am convinced that such straight talk was rather advantageous for cadets. I am very grateful to the coordinator of training of Kherson police officers Anna Dunaieva, the methodologist Tatyana Len’ and all invited teachers for opportunity to arrange the screening. I also thank partners from New Generation NGO – Natalia Chermoshentseva and Oksana Glebushkina who now are in charge of holding Docudays UA Travelling Festival in Kherson region,” Anna Martyniuk, coordinator of the Legal Space web portal said.

By the way, for the first time in Ukraine the XII Docudays UA Travelling Festival was presented to police officers.
