On June 13 a joint briefing of the Minister of Justice of Ukraine Pavlo Petrenko and director of the Human Rights and Justice Program Initiative of International Renaissance FoundationRoman Romanov on the development of the legal aid system in Ukraine was held.
Due to recent misunderstanding between the Ministry of Justice and the Coordinating Center for legal aid providing regarding the selection process of a head of the Coordinating Center the press briefing was aimed to present the common position of the parties and to answer questions on further development of FLA.
“The International Renaissance Foundation “spearheaded” the legal aid system since 2005, when it initiated discussion and further developed and funded low community offices in Kharkiv, Khmelnytsky and Bila Tserkva. They became the prototype of the future system. The Ministry of Justice and the Coordinating Center for legal aid providing have been and are our reliable partners. Currently, FLA is a big major success story in Ukraine, which is a benchmark for many of our neighbors. It protects human rights and converts the problem to the solution. Ahead is a new stage of its development, which is to be transformed from aid in individual cases into the ability to provide systemic effects", said the director of the Human Rights and Justice Program Initiative of the International Renaissance Foundation Roman Romanov.
The Minister of Justice for his part said that it was decided to conduct a new consultative competition for the position of a Director of the Coordinating Center for legal aid providing. And added that during the period of the competition the FLA system would work normally. All misunderstandings are exhausted, so the Ministry of Justice and the Coordinating Center continue providing the Ukrainian citizens with legal protection.
